I am not a theologian and I have no system to sell. I am a person who keeps a notebook and writes things down when they will not leave me alone, usually some small moment from an ordinary week that turned out to be carrying more than it first appeared. Most of these posts begin that way: with something too minor to mention that I could not stop thinking about.
The writers I keep returning to, Henri Nouwen, Simone Weil, Thomas Merton, and a few others, share a stubborn insistence that the spiritual life is not somewhere else. It is here, in the dishes and the waiting rooms and the conversations we are half-paying-attention to. I read them not for answers so much as for company, and for the reminder to look more closely at what is already in front of me.
