Keeping the Sabbath Badly
I have never once kept a Sabbath the way the books describe it. I have kept it badly, partially, with interruptions, and I have come to think this might be the only way most of us ever will.

The Practice of Attention
Simone Weil wrote that attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. For a long time I read that as a lovely exaggeration. I think I am only now beginning to understand she meant it plainly.

On Waiting
Most of the spiritual life, as far as I can tell, is waiting. Not the dramatic waiting of the answered prayer, but the ordinary, unglamorous waiting that fills the in-between.

Doubt as a Form of Faith
I used to think doubt was the opposite of faith. Now I think doubt is something faith does, that a faith with no doubt in it is usually a faith that has simply stopped asking questions.

The Stranger's Kindness
A man I will never see again paid for my coffee on a morning when I badly needed something to go right. He had no way of knowing. That is exactly what made it matter.
